Good knowledge of the occurrence of Cryptosporidium in sheep and goats, as well as knowledge of which species they carry, is a prerequisite for being able to correctly evaluate the risk these animals pose for possible zoonotic transmission. At present, we lack sufficient knowledge of both the occurrence and which species of Cryptosporidium that both lactating sheep and goats may carry, knowledge that is of great importance for being able to best prevent transmission of this parasite.
